In September 1939, as the prospect of War in Europe had just became a harsh reality, the City of Belgrade reverberated to the sound of the only Grand Prix Motor Race to be held during these hostilities. A precursor to what we know today as the Formula series, this was to be the first and only such competition to race at Kalemegdan fortress.
On September 1st this year, the spirit of this historic event will live again on the streets surrounding Kalemegdan fortress in Belgrade. The event is organized by Motor Heritage Consulting, with the patronage of the Embassy of Italy in Belgrade, Italian Institute of Culture and The Royal Family Karađorđević, in cooperation with The City of Belgrade, AMSS, Serbian Association for Historic Vehicles and with technical support of Konfindustria Serbia.
The British-Serbian Chamber of Commerce is also proud to support the Belgrade
Grand Prix 2024 in welcoming Classic sports cars and their drivers to compete again on the streets of Belgrade.
In 1939, the Grand Prix had marked a significant point in European motorsport history. The era had been defined by the dominance of German engineering, most notably the Mercedes “Silver Arrows“ and Auto Union. The shadow of war had prevented participation of a number of other nations but the crowd of 100,000 spectators nonetheless watched as the greatest drivers of the age fought hard for the win.
Then, as now, the Royal Family of Serbia were supporters of the event. The 1939 race was accordingly scheduled to coincide with the birthday of the young King Peter II Karađorđević, whilst Queen Maria was herself an enthusiastic and unique female driver of the royal Rolls Royce!!
We are pleased that this year the competition will see 40 magnificent vehicles and drivers of many nationalities.
